How to Prepare For Nursing in High School

4 ways you can prepare for nursing as a high school student

In HS it seems that there isn’t a lot of information on what you can do to prepare for your future as a nurse. It is really up to your own research. So, I thought it would be helpful to give some tips on what you can do as a high school student to prepare for your future career.

what you can do:

1. CLUBS: Join any health related clubs at your school. If your school doesn’t have one, you can make one. Making a club looks really good on your college applications. I made a club in high school, but it was nursing related. Being apart of a club allows you to meet more future nurses, as well as get involved in the nursing community. If you need help with that let me know!⠀⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⠀
2. CLASSES: Take any health related classes that are offered at your high school. If they offer anatomy/physiology take that. Some schools also have pre-professional classes. At my school it was called ROP and I took a medical class where I learned terminology, vital signs, and had an internship! I gained a lot of knowledge and experience that I still use today. ⠀⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⠀
3. AP: It is recommended to take as many science and math classes as you can in Hs, especially at the Advanced Placement level. Try to take AP Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Language. Not only will it make your college course pre-requisites easier, you will also get college credit!⠀⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⠀
4. SHADOW/VOLUNTEER: Of course you’ll need to get some experience. Volunteer at your local (or abroad) hospital and/or do shadow programs. There are a lot of programs out there for high school students interested in the healthcare field. You should definitely try to do one and get as much experience as you can! I also have a previous post on different nursing related experiences, so make sure to check that out!⠀⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⠀
◇ These tips will not only help solidify your love for nursing, but will also give you valuable experience that looks good on your college applications and resume! If you are trying to get into a direct entry nursing program out of high school (like my school USF), these might be apart of the requirements already.⠀⁣⁣
